Bright Okpocha, widely known by his stage name Basketmouth, is a renowned Nigerian comedian, actor, and musician. Born on September 14, 1978, in Lagos State, Nigeria, he hails from Abia State.
Basketmouth completed his primary and secondary education in Apapa, Lagos, before attending the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Edo State, where he earned a degree in Sociology and Anthropology.
Career
Basketmouth's career began in the entertainment industry with a passion for music. In 1991, he discovered his talent for drumming and, by 1994, ventured into rapping.
He formed a group called "Da Psychophats" in 1995, but the group disbanded before releasing any tracks. Subsequently, he established another rap group, "Da Oddz," with his brother Godwin and Muyiwa Ola-Phillips; however, their style of rap was not widely accepted in Nigeria at the time.
Transitioning from music, Basketmouth found his calling in comedy, where he has since made a significant impact.
Comedy and Acting
Basketmouth gained prominence through his unique comedic style, leading to the organization of popular stand-up comedy concerts like "Basketmouth Uncensored" across the globe.
He appeared in Lagbaja's music video titled "Gra Gra" in 2000 and won the National Comedy Award for Best Stand-up Comedian of the Year in both 2005 and 2006.
In 2021, he was nominated in the inaugural edition of The Humour Awards Academy alongside fellow comedian Mr. Funny. Additionally, he has appeared in the Africa Magic show "My Flatmates" (2016) and, in December 2020, launched his comedy web series titled "Papa Benji."
Music
In 2014, Basketmouth expanded his creative repertoire by launching a record label, Barons World Entertainment. He released a highlife album titled "Yabasi" in November 2020 as the soundtrack for the movie "Papa Benji," featuring artists like Ladipoe, BOJ, The Cavemen, Bez, Waje, Duncan Mighty, Flavour, and Phyno.
In 2022, he released another album titled "Horoscope," which included collaborations with artists such as Johnny Drille, Simi, M.I Abaga, Buju, Peruzzi, Oxlade, Reekado Banks, Falz, Magnito, Illbliss, Dremo, and Flavour. Basketmouth has confirmed that his third studio album, titled "Uburu," is scheduled for release in October 2023.
Personal Life
Basketmouth is married to Elsie Uzoma Okpocha, and together they have three children. Despite his diverse career, he maintains a private personal life, focusing on his family and creative ventures.
